The thesis is a translation practice report. The translator selects chapters 8 and 9of the English monograph The End of the Myth: From the Frontier to the Border Wall in the Mind of America as translation material. This book explores the ways in which the frontier as a concept,a myth, and an ideology has remained central to how America has conceived of itself and how,in the latter part of the 20 th and the early 21 st Centuries, the myth has begun to collapse upon itself. The book is a historical narrative, and the translator should ensure the fidelity of the translation so that it conforms to historical facts and conveys the intention of the original author. The purpose of this translation is to provide Chinese readers with new reading materials on “frontier thesis”.Based on this purpose, under the guidance of Skopos Theory proposed by Hans Vermeer, the translator adopts the translation strategy of domestication as the main strategy and foreinization as the supplementary strategy to solve the difficulties encountered in the translation process. The difficulties encountered by the translator in the process of translation mainly include a large number of proper nouns, long and difficult sentences, and complex sentence structures.Under the guidance of Skopos theory, the translator adopts adding in-text annotation, adding extratextual annotation, explaining specific meaning to solve the translation of proper nouns. The translator adopts various translation methods such as literal translation, free translation and addition to solve the long and difficult sentences to achieve the fidelity of the translation and to ensure the readability and acceptability of the translation. This report is divided into five chapters. The first chapter is an introduction to the background of translation.Chapter 2 is an introduction to translation theory.Chapter 3elaborates the translation process,i.e.,pre-translation,while-translation,and posttranslation.Chapter 4 is case analysis. The translator is guided by Skopos Theory and its three rules to analyze in detail the specific cases encountered in the translation process at the lexical level and at the syntactic level.Chapter 5 is the summary, which mainly summarizes the gains, reflections, limitations and expectations for the future. This report uses Skopos Theory to discuss how to solve the problems in EnglishChinese translation of informative and expressive texts.Skopos Theory can effectively guide the translation of informative and expressive texts and guide the translator to choose appropriate translation strategies and translation methods, which will be a reference for future peers to translate similar texts.
