A Report On Translation Of An Ecological Research Into Endangered Minority Languages In Yunnan Province(Introduction And Chapter One)

Language is an important inheritance in the human society,but now more and more minority languages are on the verge of extinction.As the province where the most ethnic minorities are distributed in China,Yunnan has seven ethnic languages which are endangered or near endangered.UNESCO has repeatedly called on the international community to pay attention to endangered languages,making it all the more necessary to translate more research monographs and papers on endangered domestic languages.This report discusses the C-E translation of An Ecological Research into Endangered Minority Languages in Yunnan Province,under the guidance of Newmark’s communicative translation theory.This book,as one of the final achievements of the National Social Science Fund of China chaired by professor CUN Hongbin of Faculty of Foreign Languages and Cultures of Kunming University of Science and Technology,studies seven endangered minority languages in Yunnan from the perspective of ecolinguistics,which is of great theoretical and practical significance and value.This monograph has its distinctive textual and linguistic features,requiring translators to be familiar with the text,to have certain interdisciplinary knowledge,and to complete the translation under the guidance of appropriate translation theory and techniques.Therefore,under the guidance of Newmark’s communicative translation theory,the translator makes detailed use of translation techniques including omission,conversion,combination and reverse translation.The translator undertakes the translation of the introduction and the chapter one,with a total of 46,546 Chinese characters.The translator selected 10,184 Chinese characters as the text to analyze in this report,from aspects including words,syntax and discourse,and discussed some suitable translation techniques adopted in this translation practice.Through this translation practice,the translator hopes to understand more about the translation of academic monographs and offer a case for the application of communicative translationtheory in similar text translation.
