With the development of economic globalization,academic exchanges between countries are strengthening,and therefore academic translation becomes increasingly important.The source text of this translation project is excerpted from an academic work Women and the Family in Chinese History written by Patricia Buckley Ebrey.The author of the book researched the family system and kinship systems of Chinese Song dynasty from a different perspective than Chinese scholars.Based on Nida’s functional equivalence theory,the report explores the guiding role of the theory in academic text translation and provides some references for academic text translation.The translator adopts functional equivalence theory as guidance to analyze some typical cases from the perspective of lexical equivalence,syntactic equivalence and textual equivalence.To deal with the words under the guidance of functional equivalence,the translator adopts the methods of transliteration,liberal translation and conversion of parts of speech;on the sentence level,the long and complex sentences in the source text is the difficult part in the translation process.The translator mainly adopts the methods of division,restructuring and conversion of voice to achieve the equivalence between the translation and the original text;on the textual level,the author adopts the methods of addition to realize the cohesion and coherence of the text.By this translation practice,the translator has a further understanding of academic text translation,realized the importance of translation theory to the guidance of translation practice,and summarized the specific strategies that can be used for academic text translation under the guidance of functional equivalence theory.The translator also benefits a lot in translation theory and ability.
