Research On The Vocabulary Of Shu Yu

Shu Yu is a dialect dictionary used to record Sichuan dialect vocabulary during the period of late Ming and early Qing dynasties.Shu Yu collected 563 words,which contains a large number of spoken dialects in the Sichuan region.It covers many aspects such as natural geography,folklore,history,humanities and society.Meanwhile,Shu Yu creates the new model of recording dialect of an area in the certain book.It completely provides us the vocabulary system of Sichuan area.And it is an invaluable material for the study of Sichuan dialect during the Ming and Qing dynasties.The paper is divided into the following four chapters.The first chapter makes a briefly introduction of the background of the author’s life,then makes a review of the related researches on Shu Yu and Sichuan dialect.Also the reason and research methods are analyzed in this chapter.The second chapter performs research on Shu Yu from three aspects: compilation,collection and interpretation,including: the version and style,the compilation principle,the summary of the words and the interpretation rules.The third chapter discusses the justification of the vocabulary of Shu Yu,and we divide it into five parts: vocal reasons,characteristic arguments,substitution arguments,functional arguments and cultural arguments.At the same time,through the exploration of the word formation,the paper explore the regional cultural factors contained in the vocabulary form.The forth chapter studies mainly on some dialect vocabularies of Shu Yu which haven’t been recorded in the Dictionary of Chinese Dialects,and make a supplementary for the dictionary from paraphrasing and dialect system.The conclusion part gives a summary of this paper,and points out the inadequacies in the research.Finally,further research that can be carry on is also discussed in brief.
