The 2017 revision of English curriculum standards for ordinary senior high schools in China clearly states that the core literacy of English discipline mainly includes language ability,cultural awareness,thinking quality and learning ability.It shows that learners should not only learn a language,but also learn how to learn,master the means and methods of learning,cultivate unique thinking and quality and improve their ability and quality.However,there are still some deficiencies in English teaching methods in China.Therefore,it is necessary to find new methods and strategies to make up for the shortcomings of traditional teaching methods.Based on the situation,the paper studies the feasibility and effectiveness of training high school students to use concept map in reading.The questions are as follows:(1)What effect does concept map training have on students’ reading motivation?(2)To what extent does concept map training affect students’ logical thinking ability?(3)To what extent does concept map training affect students’ reading achievement?In order to solve the above problems,questionnaires,interviews and tests were used.The time of the experiment is about four month.It begins in mid-September and ends in mid-January of the following year.The objects were two parallel classes of senior one in a middle school.Experimental class with 48 students and control class with 49 students were involved in the experiment,in which two classes kept the same except for teaching methods.In the experimental class,the teacher first introduced the concept map strategy to the students and taught them how to construct and use it.After students learned the concept map,they could use it to grasp the whole article.The control class was taught by the traditional method.The following conclusions can be drawn through data collection and effective analysis.First,Concept map training has a positive effect on students’ reading motivation.Second,concept map training has a great impact on students’ logical thinking ability.After training,students could accurately find out many concepts in the article,sort them hierarchically and establish connections through analysis and comparison.Third,concept map training has a certain impact on students’English reading performance.Through training,students’ability to comb and grasp new knowledge is strengthened,so their reading performance is improved.Therefore,training students to use concept map strategy in English reading has a positive effect.
