The report consists of two parts, namely, the text translation and the study of the translated text based on the theory of Approach to Translation as Adaptation and Selection. The selected source text is Chapter Two of Discourse and Power in a Multilingual World written by Adrian Blackledge, with the subtitle of “Language Ideologies in Multilingual Contexts”.There are eight chapters in this book which talks about that the discourse of politicians and policy-makers in Britain which links languages other than English to civil disorder and threats to democracy, citizenship and nationhood. The author develops a theoretical and methodological framework to illuminate the way in which linguistic-minority speakers may be complicit in the misrecognition,or valorization,of the dominant language. This translation project is completed mostly under the guidance, inter alia,of the approach to Translation as Adaptation and Selection(referred to as TAS here after)proposed by Hu Gengshen who defines translation as “ the basic selection activity for translators to adapt to the translational eco-environment”.The fundamental principle of TAS is “multidimensional adaptation and adaptive selection”,which focuses on the three dimensions of language, culture and communication for adaptive transformation and selection.Following the requirements of TAS,the reporter aims to achieve the most natural translation on the premise of translation correctness and fluency.Based on TAS,the reporter carries out the translation of the selected academic text from the three dimensions of language, culture and communication and at the same time adopts necessary translation strategies to achieve the translation goal.
