| The annual Report on the Work of the Government covers China’s present situation and further plan on politics, economic, society, people’s livelihood, foreign affairs and so on.It also expounds Chinese government’s stance and offers general principles and guiding idea.As one of the most authoritative channel to know China, the translation of Reports on the Work of the Government affects China’s national interests, and even international relations. Therefore,it is quite necessary to study the translation in detailed way.Skopos theory was proposed by German translator Hans.J.Vermeer in the1980 s.As an important branch of German functionalism school,it has three rules, namely the skopos rule, the coherence rule, and the fidelity rule.Skopos theory mainly concerns the realization of the prospective aim of the source text in target readers. This thesis takes many texts from the Reports on the Work of the Government(from 2015 to 2019)and the C-E translations as examples, and analyzes the C-E translation methods adopted through case studies based on skopos theory and its three rules. This thesis consists of five parts. The first chapter gives the research background, objectives and significance,as well as the thesis structure. The second chapter explains the theory’s evolution, three rules, researches on it both at home and abroad, and contemporary researches on C-E translation of the reports. In the third chapter, the author studies the stylistic features of the Reports on the Work of the Government in Chinese on lexical, syntactical, and rhetorical level. In the fourth chapter, the author analyses the specific translation methods and how the the methods work in realizing intention of the source text at lexical, syntactical, and rhetorical level respectively through case studies. The author concludes in the last chapter: in translating political texts of this type,at lexical level, translators could select various methods including omission, amplification, variation and diction. At syntactical level, translators could add subjects, adopt inanimated subject with animated predicate,or make passive voice. For sentences without subjects, nomination can be applied in order to make the translated text more static. When dealing with complex sentences, translators need to reorganize information to make the translation in abidance by English writing habit of being logic and hypotactic. At rhetorical level, first of all, multiple methods such as omission, amplification, and paraphrase can be flexibly selected.Secondly, both original language form and meaning should be kept as much as possible. If impossible, the meaning is prior to the form.In conclusion, skopos theory and its rules could be the guiding principle of the C-E translation of Reports on the Work of the Government. The methods concluded in this thesis give a new perspective for further translation practice on political texts. |
