A Report On Chinese-English Translation Practice Of Report On The Work Of Dalian Municipal Government In 2020

This is a Chinese-English Translation Practice of Report on the Work of Dalian Municipal Government in 2020.In recent years,with the deepening of reform and opening up,China’s foreign exchanges and international cooperation have become more frequent.As an important embodiment of soft power and comprehensive strength,China’s language ability and translation and interpretation ability play an important role in it.Dalian is an important border city in China and one of the most economically prosperous cities in Northeast China.The development of its foreign language ability and translation and interpretation ability should never be ignored.The government work reports of Dalian showcase the social and economic development of Dalian every year,and provide an important platform to know about Dalian for readers from home and abroad.To our knowledge,for now there is no official English version report on the work of Dalian municipal government.The purpose of this translation practice is to remedy this weakness,and calls for public attention to Dalian’s foreign language ability and translation ability.In the practice,the author used Reiss’ Text Typology Theory to analyze the source text.It is a typical informative text which mainly conveys facts and information and focuses on content rather than form.The author also analyze the features of the source text and summed up its main features including repetition and redundancy,abbreviation,and metaphor,etc.Based on Vermeer’s Skopos Theory and Huang’s Three Principles of translation for China’s international communication,the author adhere to the purpose of telling English readers about Dalian’s achievement in 2019 and plan in 2020,and apply several translation methods including omission,amplification,footnote and restructuring in the practice,and thus summarized the translation strategy in the practice: explicitation.To ensure the quality of translation and avoid Chinglish,the corpora of the BNC,the‘China Keywords’ programme and national government work reports(2018-2020)are used,which can help standardize the translation and make it more accordance with how the native speakers read and say.
