Grammar is the foundation of learning a language.Learning grammar well can promote the development of learners’ language competence in significant measure.Under the pressure of examination,some teachers in middle school adopt the teaching method based on single sentence level and require students to practice repeatedly,while students can not master grammar well.Discourse refers to the whole language formed by a series of consecutive paragraphs or sentences in the process of communication.Discourse-based teaching of English grammar conforms to the current trend of textualization of examination,which combines the grammar knowledge with the discourse,explains and practices the form,meaning and usage of grammar with the support of discourse.This teaching model overcomes the shortcoming of neglecting the use of grammar in the traditional grammar teaching method,and promotes the output of grammar learners.In order to verify the effectiveness of the discourse-based teaching of English grammar,the author has carried out the experiment in two classes in Grade 7.The subjects of the study are two parallel classes in Grade 7 which are taught by the author.Both classes have one grammar class every week.The discourse-based teaching of English grammar model is adopted in experimental class,the traditional grammar teaching(in single sentence form)is adopted in control class.After the teaching experiment which lasts for three months,the grammar scores of the experimental class are significantly higher than that of the control class.Through the analysis of the questionnaire,test paper and the interview materials,the findings are concluded as follows.1)The traditional English grammar teaching model(on single sentence level)attaches too much importance to the form of grammar and ignores the meaning and use of grammar,which leads to the formation of students’ incomplete view of grammar learning.2)Discourse-based teaching of English grammar can improve students’ interest in English grammar learning.The students hold positive attitude towards this teaching mode.3)Discourse-based teaching of English grammar can promote students’ academic achievements in grammar.
