A Report On Translating Clinical Linguistics (Section 2 Of Chapter 4) From English To Chinese

Speech disorders have plagued human beings for thousands of years.Generally,normal people would have no difficulty in speech activities and language acquisition.Nevertheless,for a considerable number of people,speech disorders caused by genetic genes,metabolic system disorders and other problems exert a negative impact on their daily life.Since the middle of the 20 th century,speech disorders have attracted the attention of quite a few scholars.After a lot of experiments and research,great progress has been made.However,compared with the results obtained by researchers abroad,domestic research lacks comprehensiveness and depth.For the purpose of introducing the experimental results and techniques abroad and providing reference for the study of speech disorders in China,the translator took the second section of the fourth chapter of Clinical Linguistics as the source text,and carried out a translation practice on the basis of careful reading and analysis of the source text.The source text describes the epidemiology and aetiology,clinical presentation,assessment and diagnosis and the methods of clinical interventions of developmental verbal dyspraxia at length,which provides theoretical basis and novel therapeutic techniques for students,practitioners and researchers engaged in speech therapy and clinical linguistics studies.The objectives of this translation practice are as follows: firstly,the information conveyed should be complete and accurate;secondly,the terminologies translated should be in line with the field,professional standards or the rules of the target language,and be consistent in the whole target text;finally,the specifications and habits of Chinese language are met in the translated text,which is clear and easy to read.By analyzing the stylistic and linguistic characteristics of the source text,it was found that there exist a number of terminologies,compound and formal words.The language used is precise and concise and with rigorous logic.The purpose of the source text is to introduce the etiology and clinical presentations of developmental verbal dyspraxia and convey information objectively and accurately.Therefore,in the translation practice,the translator took the functional equivalence theory as the guidance,foreignization as the main strategy,domestication as the supplementary strategy.Meanwhile,she also used literal translation,free translation,zero translation,and amplification as translation methods and carried out the translation practice for the purpose of faithfulness,accurateness and expressiveness.The translator completed this translation practice with accuracy and fluency through consulting a large number of monographs and literature.She also had a deeper understanding of developmental verbal dyspraxia in translation.Meanwhile,this translation practice not only improved the translator’s ability in translation,but also cultivated her research ability and develop rigorous translation attitude.It is believed that this process will have a positive impact on the translator’s future work.
