With the economic development and global progress, health and learning have become unprecedentedly important topics that attracted much attention among people. However, there are still a mass of people who are perplexed by speech disorder and learning disability, which leaves a negative impact on patients’ social interaction, learning and daily life.In order to probe into the etiology, pathology, clinical manifestations, screening, diagnosis and intervention of speech disorder and learning disorder, many scholars carried out numerous researches and yielded remarkable achievements, which provide valuable reference for us to understand speech disorder and learning disability.Compared with clinical linguistics research abroad, domestic research in this field is relatively falling behind. This is a report on English-Chinese translation of Clinical Linguistics(section 1-2 in Chapter 3)written by Louise Cummings. The translation practice report is based on an accurate understanding of the source text.By translating the two sections, the translator intends to bring in research achievements abroad and accelerate clinical linguistics research in China.Through an analysis on the genre and linguistic characteristics of the source text, the translator finds that the text possesses abundant professional terms, boasts complicated and formal diction and excels in logicality and research. The source text aims to introduce the factors leading to learning disability and its clinical manifestation and transmit knowledge in a subjective and precise way.Additionally, the purpose of the translation is to accurately convey the source text information. Therefore, during the process of translation, the translator employs the functional equivalence theory as the guiding theory, applies domestication as the main strategy and foreignization as the auxiliary strategy, and adopts some translation methods, such as transliteration, literal translation, shift and amplification. The translator has tackled some difficulties including the translation of terminologies, long and complex sentences and the equivalence of translation styles. As a result of the translation practice, the target text fullfils its goal of transmitting clinical linguistic information truthfully and fully to the target readers. The translator made a great effort to put the clinical linguistics terms into Chinese and many of them could not be found before this practice. This translation practice has not only improved the translator’s skills but also provided the translator with knowledge on learning disability, which is believed to be beneficial to the translator’s teaching career in the future.
