An Analysis Of BCM~+ Model On "Xíngzǒu De X" Construction Based On Decategorization Theory

With the rapid development of the Internet,online language is constantly being produced.New expressions such as“xíngzǒu de CD(行走的CD)”,“xíngzǒu de túshūguǎn(行走的图书馆)”,“xíngzǒu de ATM(行走的ATM)”,and“xíngzǒu de chúfáng(行走的厨房)”has been continuously used on social networking platforms such as We Chat and Microblog and has entered into people’s life.These expressions are increasingly widely used by people,thus giving birth to the“xíngzǒu de X”construction.In recent years,several scholars have conducted studies on the“xíngzǒu de X”construction from the perspective of Cognitive Linguistics,but they have only paid attention to the metaphoric phenomenon of the“X”in the construction,and they have believed that the metaphorical“X”mainly activates the concept of people.The predecessors’studies have not noticed the decategorization phenomenon in the construction,nor have they established a closed corpus to study it in combination with the sociality of language.In view of this,based on Cognitive Linguistics and Sociolinguistics,from the perspective of the decategorization in Dynamic Categorization Theory,under the combination of Blending Theory,Construction Coercion,Metaphor,Metonymy,and language sociality,this article attempts to establish a Blending-Coercion-Metaphor&Metonymy+Sociality Model(BCM~+Model),which is built to quantitively explain the cognitive mechanism of the“xíngzǒu de X”construction and its grammatical,semantic,and pragmatic features,and to explore how this construction can generate new meanings through the decategorization phenomenon under the BCM~+model.The followings are found through analysis of instances:(1)In terms of grammar,43.48%of the“xíngzǒu de X”construction are nouns.56.52%of the types where“X”is a noun phrase,90.77%of the phrases are modified by a single adjective,and only 9.23%are modified by two or more adjectives the proportion of noun phrases modified by adjectives is far more than the phrase modified by two or more adjectives.Therefore,we believe that the expression characteristics of disyllabic syllables in Chinese expression are more prominent in the“xíngzǒu de X”construction.(2)In terms of semantics,the semantics of the word“xíngzǒu”in this construction has been decategorized from the original meaning of“walking and moving”to“propaganda”,“spreading”and“displace something that cannot move by itself”accounts for 85.22%,13.04%and 1.74%respectively.Secondly,the“X”in the construction also turns out a decategorization phenomenon under the action of the BCM~+model.After the decategorization phenomenon of different nouns or noun phrases,its new meaning is far from its prototype meaning and a new meaning is generated.Among them,there are 247 examples of“X”affected by metaphor,accounting for 72.17%;95 examples of“X”affected by metonymy,accounting for27.83%(3)In terms of pragmatics,it is found that this construction reflects the sociality of language.Initially,by classifying the“X”part in this construction,we have found that“X”covers ten types of clothing and home furnishings,books and stationery,food,and places,basically including most nouns or noun phrases.It can be seen that most nouns can enter into this construction,which shows that people are more inclined to produce life-related expressions,that is,the expression which is closely related to society and people’s life.Secondly,under the effect of BCM~+Model,this construction creates pragmatic functions of meaning“good”,which can be used to express plenty of good social phenomena,such as“xíngzǒu de CD(行走的CD)”means“good singers”and“xíngzǒu de huàbǐ(行走的画笔)”stands for Good Paintings on the African Exhibition and so on.
