Fluency is one of the key measures for the quality of interpretation.However,keeping fluency all the time is easier said than done as disfluencies are common in our daily communication.Interpreting is a real-time complicated language activity,which requires interpreters to take speakers’ address,delivery,accent,speed and other factors into consideration.Such tasks are sometimes overwhelming;thus,disfluencies are inevitable.The thesis involves a case study based on the mock conference of China Chief Economist Forum on the Economic Prospects of 2020 and identifies three major types of disfluencies: Inappropriate Pause,Repetition and Self-repair.The author then analyzes reasons behind which fall into four categories: mistakes in note-taking,difficulties in expression,inefficient use of coping strategies,and the lack of selfmonitoring.To reduce disfluencies,the author proposes four strategies: first,interpreters should enhance analyzing skills and optimize the notation.Second,they should increase their daily exposure to English,actively use what they have learned in their daily practice and get fully prepared before interpreting.Third,interpreters can discuss with their colleagues on when and how to use coping strategies so as to be more confident about using such techniques.Last but not least,interpreters can transcribe their interpreting audios to be more aware of the disfluencies in their own interpreting and set goals to reduce them with the help of their colleagues.
