As a part of Chinese traditional culture,Wuxia culture enjoys a unique status in the Chinese speaking world.Among the Wuxia literature works,Jin Yong’s novels are universally acknowledged as the dominators,which is unprecedented in quantity,quality and popularity.However,due to its unique literary style and rich traditional Chinese cultural elements,it has not great influence in the western world.In 201 8,the English version of Legends of the Condor Heroes:A Hero Born translated by Anna Holmwood was published,which greatly promoted the development of Wuxia culture in the world wide.At the same time,its translation studies are also booming.Since the translation variation theory was put forward in the 1990s by Professor Huang Zhonglian,it has developed for more than two decades and gradually formed a complete theoretical framework.It points out that translators should adopt corresponding strategies to deal with the original contents under the specific needs of certain readers,and summarizes seven adaptation measures as well as eleven variation methods.Under the guidance of the translation variation theory,this paper makes an in-depth analysis of the paragraph structures,the acceptance or rejection of the content,the proper terms that rich in Chinese cultural elements and the feasibility of applying this theory to Legends of the Condor Heroes:A Hero BornThis paper consists of five chapters.The first chapter mainly introduces the research background,significance and outline of the paper.The second chapter makes a brief overview on Jin Yong’s works and the characteristics of the English version of Legends of the Condor Heroes:A Hero Born as well as information of the author and the translator.The third chapter analyzes the theoretical framework and related studies on variation theory,and discusses its feasibility in the process of translation.The fourth chapter takes adaptation,deletion,addition and interpretation as the starting points,and selects the typical examples in the translation to analyze the paragraph structures,the acceptance or rejection of original contents and the handling of Chinese cultural elements.The fifth chapter is the conclusion,which gives a summary on the feasibility of applying translation variation theory to literary translation,especially in Wuxia novels and limitations of the paper as well as prospects for future studies.
