A Report On The Translation Of The Profitable Artist From The Perspective Of Communicative Translation And Semantic Translation

This report is based on the translation of an entrepreneurial book named The Profitable Artist,which mainly discusses how to help artists start and run their own companies.Under the guidance of Peter Newmark’s translation theories of communicative translation(CT)and semantic translation(ST),the translator successfully overcame the translation difficulties at lexical and syntactic level.In this report,the translator first introduced the background and significance of the translation task,and then analyzed the language features of the book.After identifying its text type,the translator began her translation process.She gave a minute description of the three translation stages and found Newmark’s translation theory played a guiding role in the process.Guided by CT theory,the translator gave priority to the target readers’ response,taking a series of methods to achieve good communicative effects.Through free translation,adding words and adjusting the word order,she clearly conveyed the meaning of the book title,subtitle and slogan.By explaining difficult words and remodeling syntactic structures,she made her translated text more natural and smoother.Directed by ST theory,the translator adopted literal translation to handle the terms and retained parallel structures in the source text,which not only considerably enhanced the accuracy of terms,but also maintained the language form and unique writing style of the original writer.While CT and ST theories have distinctive features,they are closely connected with each other.Sometimes both of them can be used in the translation of a single sentence,thus producing a more accessible translationThe translation of this book made the translator realize that although CT and ST theories are not new concepts,they do exert lasting influence over the translation practice.
