| This report is based on the author’s experience of interpreting for the committee of the 2019 World Youth Cadet Chess Championship. The author briefly introduces the background of the competition, characteristics of escort interpreting and the significance of this report, and elaborates how she prepared and conducted the escort interpreting in two parts:preparation for the task and significant difficulties that she had encountered. When junior interpreters enter the workplace, they should learn to quickly adapt to the changing contexts for a smooth communication, and make a reasonable and necessary assessment of their interpretation so as to find problems and gain promotion under the guidance of suitable theories. Therefore, the author reviews the Adaptation Theory, proposed by Jef Verschueren, and focuses on the four angles of investigation, including contextual correlations of adaptability, structural objects of adaptability, dynamics of adaptability, and salience of the adaptation process. In the most crucial part of this report, the author analyzes 14 cases of dynamic linguistic choices and adaptations during the whole process and sums up some interpreting skills under the guidance of the Adaptation Theory.Through detailed analysis, the author has developed a deeper understanding of the theory and hopes to provide some references for her further study and other trainee interpreters. |
