Academic works are not only the essence of the research results in a certain field but also the important reference for scholars.So the translation of academic works is significant for the development of academics.Sam Shepard is known as ―one of the greatest American dramatists in his contemporaries‖.During over 50-year-writing career,he has created more than 50 dramas.He won many awards throughout his life including the Pulitzer Prize for Buried Child in 1979.The Cambridge Companion to Sam Shepard is one of authoritative books studying Sam Shepard.Born Injured: The Theatre of Sam Shepard is the first chapter in this book.And the translator selects it as the translation material.The original author of Chapter One in this book,Christopher Bigsby,is an academic,novelist and biographer.He won the Bernard Hewitt Award for Outstanding Research in Theatre History and the George Freedley Jury Award for The Cambridge History of the American Theatre.He has a high reputation in this field.In this chapter,the author makes a detailed analysis of themes and writing styles of Shepherd‘s works.This paper is academic and logical,so how to reflect them in Chinese translation becomes a big difficulty.Therefore,guided by Halliday and Hasan’s Cohesion and Coherence Theory,the report adopts grammatical cohesion and lexical cohesion including reference,ellipsis and repetition to analyze translation problems caused by the differences between English and Chinese in the perspective of cohesion and coherence,and then finds translation methods to improve the quality of the translation and the coherent effect。It is helpful preserve the logicality of academic works.
