| The 2019 International Spring Cultural Landscape City Alliance Conference was held in Jinan in September 2019,aiming to further enhance the influence of both the springs and the City of Jinan in the world through a series of activities.Martin Veal,a council member of the city of Bath in Britain,was invited to attend the conference and visit Jinan.The author worked as the interpreter for Mr.Martin Veal.This report is based on this interpreting practice.Interpreting is essentially a communicative activity.As the intermediary between the interlocutors in the communication,the interpreter plays a pivotal role in the process.Therefore,the use of communication strategies is key to the quality of the interpreting.This interpreting task went between Chinese and English,which features unpredictable changes with a variety of topics,a wide range of audience,a large number of speakers,and was affected by the schedule and environment,thus testing not only the interpreter’s language competence and knowledge base but also her capability to choose appropriate strategies in different interpreting situations.This report describes the application of communication strategies in the interpreting task,explaining the choices of appropriate communication strategies in response to different interpreting tasks,and discussing the effectiveness of those strategies in fulfilling the tasks in different situations:the restructuring strategy to establish logical connections;the paraphrasing strategy for special phrases;the non-linguistic strategy for visualized information transfer;and the cooperative strategy for joint efforts in the communication.This report aims to provide a reference for future interpreters in similar situations so as to help them select corresponding communication strategies based on different tasks,more effectively cope with emergencies and adapt to special tasks with multiple themes,audience groups as well as environmental disturbance. |
