A Report On The E-C Translation Practice Of COVID-19-themed Articles Under The Guidance Of Skopos Theory

In 2019,the COVID-19 epidemic struck suddenly and had a huge impact on human life.Under this special background,the author received a special translation task,which was commissioned by a teacher from Xiaj in No.1 Middle School.In order to deepen the high school students’ understanding of COVID-19 and broaden their horizons,the teacher selected many English materials related to COVID-19,entrusted the author to translate them into Chinese,and used them as reading materials for the students of the school.According to the requirement of the client,the purpose of this translation task is to make the source text accurately and clearly conveyed to the readers.Therefore,the author started from the features of the source texts and the requirement of the client,completing the translation task under the guidance of Skopos Theory.This report mainly discusses the translation task from two aspects.In terms of the translation task itself,the author firstly introduces its background information and the significance,and then describes the whole translation process.Secondly,in terms of the specific issues,the author introduces the difficulties encountered in the translation process.Specifically,the author divides them into three groups:difficulty of identifying and translating the medical terms related to COVID-19,difficulty of analyzing and translating the sentences with complex grammatical elements,and difficulty of understanding and translating the non-linguistic marks.Given the above difficulties,corresponding translation strategies were adopted under the guidance of Skopos Theory.First,for the translation of medical terms related to COVID-19,the translator followed the Skopos Rule,classifying the translation of these medical terms,which involved the translation of abbreviations and the translation of common words used as technical terms in a certain field.Second,for the translation of sentences involving complex grammatical elements,the translator followed the Coherence Rule and the Fidelity Rule of the Skopos Theory,and mainly used the method of linear translation,reverse translation and synthetic translation to translate such sentences.Third,for the translation of non-linguistic marks,according to different contexts,the author followed Coherence Rule and adopted different strategies to translate them,zero translation or other translation strategies included.With the above strategies,the author eventually completed the translation task.
