The Report On The C-E Translation Of Biography Of Jiang Yiwu(Chapter Six)from The Perspective Of Relevance Theory

Wuchang Uprising,which broke out in 1911,is the key to overthrow China’s feudal monarchy for thousands of years.Due to the success of Wuchang Uprising and the great influence in the Revolution of 1911,a large number of soldiers and lower-ranking officers who were once unknown in the Hubei New Army became the"a man of great merit",and left their names in China’s modem history.Jiang Yiwu is one of them.Jiang Yiwu has made great contributions to the revolution in the Yangtze River Basin,the determination of the location of the uprising,the mobilization of New Army,and the union of Literary Society and Co-progress Association.Every language in the world depends on a specific thinking and cultural background,and each language produced in different social and cultural backgrounds have their own uniqueness,which leads to different cognitive contextual effects in the process of communication.According to relevance theory,translation is a kind of verbal communication,a process in which people make inferences based on different contexts.The translator should consider the historical background and language habits of the original text,as well as the cultural background and communication habits of the target readers,and seek the optimal relevance,so as to ensure the clarity and accuracy of the translated text in terms of information and emotion.This thesis takes Chapter 6 of Biography of Jiang Yiwu as the text,and carries out English translation on the basis of cross-cultural relevance theory from the perspective of cultural factors to express the original information faithfully and naturally and make the translated information absorbed effectively by the readers.The author advocates to create adequate and appropriate contextual effects through free translation,transliteration plus annotation,domestication and other translation methods or strategies,so that the target language readers can obtain the optimal relevance with the least processing efforts under the favorable contextual effects.On the basis of translation practice,this paper makes a case study of the translation,mainly exploring the language features and translation methods or strategies.The completion of this translation will provide a reference for translators who are studying the translation of chronicle biographies to choose translation methods in a timely and flexible manner.
