| Simultaneous interpreting with text(SI with text)is widely used in conferences.It can be quite challenging for interpreters doing SI with text when the speaker frequently deviates from the written text.During Chinese-English SI with text,the study aims to explore the effects of the speaker’s deviation from the manuscript on interpreting quality and the student interpreters’ coping strategies for deviation by adopting Daniel Gile’s Effort Model as a theoretical framework.The study conducts an experiment with fourteen participants,uses a questionnaire and analyzes the results quantitatively and qualitatively.Quantitatively,the study uses rating scales to quantify performance so as to explore the effects of deviation on performance.Qualitatively,the study demonstrates examples of student interpreters’output for each type of deviation to show the specific effects.The coping strategies for deviation are also presented.The major findings are as follows:1.The performance worsens due to deviation,and more meaning errors and delivery errors occur.Adding information influences performance the most and omission the least.2.Generalization and not referring to the text are the most used tactics that can reduce energy for production and reading respectively to achieve balanced supply and demand of energy.More specific about not referring to the text is that student interpreters show adherence to the text throughout the process as they constantly look at and away from the text.It is expected that the specific effects of deviation on performance are made clear so that the findings can be helpful for student interpreters and teachers in practices and teaching. |
