Assessing Machine Translation Quality Of Chinese Allusion

Machine translation has been criticized regarding cultural translation.With the all-round opening up of China,the task of cultural translation has also increased,requiring the assistance of high-quality machine translation.Three volumes of Xi Jinping:The Governance of China have received international attention and become the authoritative text for foreign readers to understand China.President Xi Jinping often cites Chinese allusions to illustrate his views and express his feelings,and the allusions are often embedded with the profound traditional Chinese culture.In this context,by comparing and assessing the quality of various machine translations of Chinese allusions in The Governance of China,the reliability of machine translation in cultural translation can be indicated,and problems can be summarized for improvement of machine translation quality to better serve cultural communication.This thesis aims to explore the effectiveness of machine translation in allusion translation.Three online free machine translation tools:Google Translate,Sogou Translate and DeepL Translate are chosen,112 paragraphs containing Chinese allusions in The Governance of China are extracted as the research data,and the official translation serves as reference translation.BLEU Metric is used for quantitative analysis and the House Model is used for qualitative analysis.The problems are summarized to provide suggestions for translation quality improvement.The results of the study show that the DeepL Translate performs the best.In the translation of proverbs,Google is better than Sogou;in the translation of classic texts,Sogou performs better.However,MT systems need to better understand the source text and the context to improve the translation quality.
