According to New English Curriculum Standards for General Senior High Schools(2017 Edition 2020 Revision),thinking quality includes logical thinking,critical thinking and creative thinking.At the same time,New English Curriculum Standards includes students’ thinking quality as one of the core competences of English subjects,which indicates the importance of cultivating students’ thinking qualities in English teaching.Previous research shows that the classroom is the main place to cultivate students’ thinking qualities and the teaching activities designed by teachers have a certain positive effect on the cultivation of students’ thinking qualities as well.Therefore,this thesis is intended to cultivate students’ thinking qualities from the perspective of Activity-based English Learning in New English Curriculum Standard.This thesis is mainly based on the following two research questions:1.How can students’ thinking qualities be cultivated under the guidance of Activity-based English Learning?2.What are effects of cultivating students’ thinking qualities in teaching of English reading under the guidance of Activity-based English Learning?This study took two key classes of senior one in a key middle school in Renshou as participants,which lasts for three months.Questionnaire,interview and classroom observation are used as the research instruments in this thesis.During the experiment,the two classes were divided into experimental class and control class for comparative analysis.The textbook used in the experiment is the third volume of high school English published by Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press.During the experiment,the controlled class is taught under the guidance of traditional teaching methods in the reading class while the experimental class is taught from perspective of Activity-based English Learning(including learning and understanding,application and practice,transfer and innovation).Then,classroom observation is implemented to analyze and explore the application of these three kinds of teaching activities.Before and after the experiment,questionnaire was used to investigate the students’ thinking quality,and SPSS26.0 was used to analyze the results obtained.Besides,in order to test the effect on the cultivation of students’ thinking qualities from the perspective of Activity-based English Learning,students in the experimental class were interviewed.The results show that it is effective to cultivate students’ thinking qualities from the perspective of Activity-based English Learning in the teaching of English reading in senior high.First of all,activity of learning and understanding can be applied to prereading stage,which can promote the development of students’ logical thinking.Secondly,while-reading stage includes activity of learning and understanding as well as activity of application and practice,which are conducive to the development of students’ critical thinking.Finally,activity of transfer and innovation can be carried out in the post-reading stage,which is beneficial for the development of students’ creative thinking.In addition,questionnaire results after experiment show that thinking quality of the students in the controlled class has got a slight promotion to some extent compared with that before the experiment.And,the thinking quality of the students in the experimental class has been significantly improved compared with that before the experiment.Currently,development of the thinking quality of the students in the experimental class is higher than that of the students in the controlled class.This indicates that students’ thinking quality has been significantly improved from the perspective of Activity-based English Learning.In addition,questionnaire results show that the improvement of students’ creative thinking is most obvious.This research explores a new method to cultivate students’ thinking qualities in the teaching of English reading,which is convenient for teachers to use for reference in their own teaching.
