The report is based on the author’s experience in simultaneously interpreting an online lecture on Topophrenia and J.R.R.Tolkien’s Literary Cartography given by Professor Robert Tally,a world-renowned scholar, and critic, for the#USSOBOOKHOUR series in the UK.The lecture was delivered online on October21,2020,lasting one hour and forty minutes. The author provided online simultaneous interpreting for a total of 29 attendees.Simultaneous interpreting is seldomly delivered online previously but possibly becoming a trend in the near future due to the lockdown of the pandemic.Different from conventional simultaneous interpreting, online interpreters have to tackle with more challenges. The network and electronic equipment need to be debugged repeatedly. And the interpreters have to choose a live platform different from the lecture. The report describes the process of this assignment in detail, analyzes the real problems encountered in simultaneous interpreting, including misinterpreting of terms, incomplete intensive information, and delivery insufficiency with the Schema Theory as a base for solutions from the aspects of linguistic schemata and content schemata respectively. The report is a summary of the experience of this simultaneous interpreting assignment, exploring the shortcomings of this interpreting practice and the inspiration for future interpreting work. The report helps to provide a review and reference for improvement so as to achieve a scientific and efficient simultaneous interpreting service. The scripts and some conclusions in the report are expected to provide a reference for interpreting, and also for the interpreters and readers of the Lord of Rings.
