A Comparative Study On The Flower And Bird Paintings Of Qi Baishi And Huang Binhong

Qi Baishi and Huang Binhong are known as the "Northern Qi and Southern Huang" in modern art circles.Qi Baishi is characterized as the "Northern Qi",a Chinese painting master,who is famous for painting shrimp.And the "Southern Huang" refers to Huang Binhong,a famous landscape painter who is expert in painting theorist.It shows that Qi Baishi and Huang Binhong have pure artistic attainments and artistic influence.Qi Baishi’s flower and bird paintings are well-known all over the world,however,Huang Binhong’s are both good at landscape paintings and flower and bird paintings.Comparing the Qi Baishi’s and the Huang Binhong’s flower and bird paintings,their painting styles are quite different,and their observation are distinct too.Qi Baishi is famous for his fine brushwork and freehand flower and bird paintings.He is well-known for his spirit in shape,subtlety and depth.He not only takes part in the folk pastoral flavor,but also has the interest of traditional literati painting.Its flower and bird paintings are vigorous and graceful,elegant and clumsy.The exhibition called "Qiuruixiang" is the first exhibition in China to compare the flower and bird paintings of Qi Baishi and Huang Binhong’s.The exhibition is divided into three exhibition halls.The two’s flower and bird paintings are compared and presented in the following three sections: "not like themselves","elegant and beautiful" and "the real formula of paintings".Therefore,this essay aims to compare the creative concept and painting style of Qi Baishi and Huang Binhong,and the similarities and differences between them.This essay is divided into four sections.The first part is comparing the experiences between them.It briefly introduces Qi Baishi’s life and Huang Binhong’s life,including the painting views of Qi Baishi,the Huang Binhong’s painting theory and the relationship between his painting creation and the background of this times.The comparison between their flower and bird paintings’ creative ideas are based on the "Qiu Ruixiang" painting exhibition.Qi Baishi’s creation ideas of flower-and-bird paintings include the influence of “country complex” on his paintings,“Suoning Reform” and the experiences of travelling outside five times.And Huang Binhong’s creation ideas of flower and bird paintings include the outlook on inner beauty,the practice of “Five kinds with the writing brush method and seven kinds use the ink technique”about landscape painting in the flower-and-bird paintings,and the influence of Huang Binhong’s idea of “draw calligraphy into painting” on his flower-and-bird paintings.The comparison of painting conceptions between Qi Baishi and Huang Binhong,they can be summarized as “popular art and literature” or “highbrow art and literature” and “Literati Painting” or “Academy Painting”;the third part is the difference of Qi Baishi’s and Huang Binhong’s flower and bird painting styles,the article elaborates Qi Baishi’s and Huang Binhong’s flower and bird painting from four aspects of theme,ink using,color and composition.The fourth part describes the comparison between Qi Baishi’s and Huang Binhong’s flower and bird painting artistic attainments and artistic influence.
