A Report On Simulated Consecutive Interpreting Of The TED Interview “How We Must Respond To The Coronavirus Pandemic?” From The Perspective Of Cohesion Theory

The year 2020 saw significant changes of the whole world in the surge of COVID-19,a novel respiratory virus which isnot seen ever before.In March 2020,Bill Gates explored the trend of COVID-19 online in the special series of TED Connects named “How We Must Respond to the Coronavirus Pandemic” and discussed the reason why the United States extremely needed to do tremendous testing and take quarantine measures immediately.This report is on a simulated interpretation.I conducted of interpreting interview under the guidance of cohesion theory,especially the differences between English and Chinese cohesive devices.By analyzing the source language,target language,application and shifts of cohesive devices in interpreting task,I find that using appropriate cohesive devices is of vital importance to the accomplishment of the interpreting task.The cohesive devices in this report are mainly divided into four types including reference,substitution and ellipsis,conjunction,and lexical cohesion.As is shown in this simulated interpreting practice,strategy omission is applied to interpretation of reference.Strategies of addition and repetition are mainly used for substitution,while strategy of omission is applied for conjunction.
