| The early novels of German-Swiss writer Hermann Hesse are fresh and natural in style and profound and timeless in thought. But its value is mostly ignored by researchers at home and abroad.Especially the novels "Gertrud","Rosshalde",and "Knulp" are rarely mentioned by researchers.Among the few research results, although some scholars have paid attention to the aestheticism in Hermann Hesse’s early novels, few people have noticed the "divinity" factor in Hermann Hesse’s early novels. Therefore, the thesis will study the "divine aestheticism" in Hermann Hesse’s early novels. The main research method is to combine paragraphs with words such as "God","art" and "beauty" in the novel,as well as Hermann Hesse’s related prose works, supplemented by theoretical research. The thesis hopes to contribute to the understanding of the ideological connotation of Hermann Hesse’s early novels. The introduction briefly introduces the important value of Hermann Hesse’s early novels.Although Hermann Hesse’s early novels already contain the shadow of the famous novels in the later period, and the factors such as "God" and "divine nature" that appeared in the early novels many times reflect the profound ideological value behind the novels. However, among the research results at home and abroad,Hermann Hesse’s early novels, and even the divine aestheticism in them, have not received much attention from domestic and foreign scholars. The first part of the thesis mainly introduces the concepts of "aestheticism" and "divine aestheticism",and points out that "aestheticism" is easy to indulge in perceptual self-sufficiency and artistic pleasure. Therefore, the "divine aestheticism" that introduces the "sacred" dimension is very important."Divine Aestheticism" not only takes care of the individual feelings in the aesthetic dimension, but also takes into account the sacred pursuit, which helps to avoid the vulgar perceptual indulgence of aestheticism. The second part discusses the divine aestheticism embodied in Hermann Hesse’s early novels from three aspects: "comprehension of divinity through observation","adoption of divine standards in art",and "games and divinity".First of all,the term "observation" of "comprehension of divinity through observation" mainly refers to a state of harmony that transcends the dichotomy of subject and object in which man meets the divine. It mainly occurs when people appreciate nature, people admire beautiful women, and people read the "Bible".At these moments, people meet with nature, beautiful women, and even the divine behind the Bible.Secondly,"adoption of divine standards in art" mainly discusses this kind of art adopting divine standards, which often requires artists to pay huge hardships that are unbearable by ordinary people. However, the artist still pursues this sacred art unswervingly because of his artistic mission and artistic conscience, hoping to use this kind of art to bring comfort and purification to the minds of the viewers. Finally, the part of "games and divinity" is mainly based on children’s sacred games. This kind of sacred game is not only non-utilitarian,but also serious and full of entertainment,so it can often bring joy and emotion to the viewer. The third part of the thesis focuses on Nietzsche and Francesco d’Assisi, discussing the ideological origin of the divine aestheticism in Hermann Hesse’s early novels.Due to Hermann Hesse’s family background and his unique personal experience, the source of Hermann Hesse’s thoughts is extremely complicated. Therefore, this part mainly relates the novel text and Hermann Hesse’s related prose, etc.,focusing on the influence of Nietzsche and Francesco d’Assisi on Hermann Hesse’s early novels.Nietzsche’s Dionysian spirit influenced the aestheticism in Hermann Hesse’s early novels, and Francesco d’Assisi pursuit of the sacred by the way of beauty, etc.,influenced the divine aestheticism in Hermann Hesse’s early novels. The thesis also pointed out that in Hermann Hesse’s early novels,Nietzsche’s influence gradually faded, while the influence of Francesco d’Assisi continued throughout. The conclusion pointed out that in a modern society with a new sense of time and space, and a decline in faith, artists must shoulder the artistic mission and rekindle the courage of people to face the plight of life. And the divine aestheticism in Hermann Hesse’s early novels is the embodiment of Hermann Hesse’s own artistic responsibility. |
