A Simulation Practice Report Of E-C Simultaneous Interpreting On Ursula Von Der Leyen’s Speech In Davos Under The Principle Of Syntactic Linearity

In this report,the author simulated simultaneous interpreting under the principle of syntactic linearity.The materials are from a keynote speech by Ursula von der Leyen—the President of the European Commission—at the 2020 Davos Forum.The report introduced the background,requirements,and purpose,and the interpreting process which consists of three parts,pre-task preparations,interpreting process,and post-task reflection.Focusing on the characteristics of the speech materials and the differences between English and Chinese language,the author analyzed some given examples to find out how syntactic linearity was applied in simultaneous interpreting.Six techniques were summed up,and they are segmentation,anticipation,addition,omission,repetition,and word conversion.In the end,the author summarized the limitations of the practice and put forward some suggestions.The report showed that the simulation of the simultaneous interpretation at some latest international economic forums could help the author establish a systematic and standardized interpreting routine.What’s more,the in-depth case study of the speech materials was guided by syntactic linearity and was combined with translation techniques.By doing so,the author is supposed to solve the difficulties and questions encountered during simultaneous interpretation with the spontaneous use of such translation techniques.This will offer guidance to the author as an interpreter in the future and provide.some references for interpreters who are trained and engaged in related work.
