| From the perspective of functional equivalence, this thesis explores the Chinese-English translation strategies for culture-loaded words in Bronze and Sunflower.According to Nida’s classification of culture(Nida,1945:196),the culture-loaded words in the novel are classified into five categories. The author makes statistics, selects examples to analyze the translation strategies for culture-loaded words in the English version of the novel. The author holds that in order to improve the quality of culture-loaded words in Chinese children’s literature, the translator should do the following as much as possible under the guidance of functional equivalence: 1.For the purpose of spreading Chinese culture to Western children, the translator should try to flexibly use different strategies, including illustrations,to help children readers understand the connotation of the source text and achieve functional equivalence.2.The translator should take “reader’s response” as principle and try to use simple, interesting and vivid target language without affecting children’s understanding of the general meaning of the source text.At the same time, the translator should adopt such auxiliary strategies as annotational translation to make up for the possible loss of cultural connotation of source text.3.The purpose of culture-loaded words translation is to achieve the communication between different cultures. The translator should deeply understand the culture of source language and translated language, especially the linguistic culture with rich connotations,so as to avoid mistranslations and promote the spread of Chinese culture. |
