Pauline Elizabeth Hopkins is an African-American writer who uses literature to promote black values.Of One Blood is a work written by Hopkins in 1902 and published and serialized in The Colored American Magazine in 1903.It told the life experience and complex destiny of the two brothers Reuel Briggs,Aubrey Livingston and sister Dianthe Lusk. With an unknown life background,Aubrey possessed Dianthe, but Reuel rescued the latter and fell in love with. After that,Briggs embarked on a trip to Africa to discover his black ancestry and African royal identity, leading the black tribe to revitalize the local culture.Dianthe was reincarnated as Queen Candace of the city called Telassar, and the two eventually became husband and wife.At present, domestic scholars have very limited research on Hopkins’s works.Based on the theory of the other in post-colonialism,this research uses the methods of close reading, literature research, and social and historical criticism to analyze medical phenomena and racial argument such as hypnotism, witch, death, eugenics, etc.in Of One Blood. The utopian writing in this novel promoted the pyramid civilization and medical culture of Africa.Under the care of social constructivism, this research constructs a narrative of resistance, that is,a counter-story,to achieve the purpose of resisting Western power discourse and colonial culture, repairing and establishing black identity.Eventually, this research realizes the writing of resistance to hypnotism, eugenics, imperial medical science, the concept of death, and Western scientific civilization. In medicine narrative dominated by colonialism, patients did not receive respect,so they were compromised. Therefore they would inevitably question their position in the medical narrative. In order to regain respect, they rebuild their identity in works.Get out of this context, this kind of narrative of resistance believes that "counter-story becomes a tool to repair the damage to identity caused by the power system".In the social context where eugenics promotes white supremacy, blacks have lost their social status and are regarded as inferior. With the development of Western medical practice, medical knowledge such as hypnotism and witchcraft that cannot be scientifically tested has been excluded from the Western medical world. This article uses the distinctive images of black and white races in the novel and the substitute role played by African medicine in medicine as the research content to explore the author’s writing intentions. After research,it is found that the author adopts the narrative of resistance to against medical colonization by shaping the image of Reuel Briggs. As a representative of African medical culture,he rescued blacks with hypnotism and led blacks to their native land in Africa-the source of civilization. It resists Western power discourse and colonial culture by revealing the blackness of slavery, criticizing the absurdity of eugenics, and promotes native African medicine and civilization.
