A Report On The Chinese-English Translation Of Documentary Subtitles

This report is a case study of the C-E translation of the documentary film Xiaoguan Pass.The report author introduces the process of this translation task,and then analyzes and summarizes the problems and difficulties in the translation of documentary subtitles.The main contents of this report include five parts:task description,task process,literature review,case study and conclusion.The author first introduces the text content and the significance of this translation task,and then describes the translation process,including the search of culture-loaded words and relevant background information before translation,the specific translation process,the summary of the difficulties encountered in translation and the review of the translated manuscript after translation.The fourth chapter of this report is a translation case study,which details the three major difficulties encountered by the author in translating this documentary film:the accuracy of translation of culture-loaded words,the simplicity of subtitle translation and the overall coherence of the translation,and discusses the corresponding translation strategies and methods for these difficulties;for cultureloaded words,the author adopts the translation methods of literal translation,free translation and literal translation with annotation;in order to achieve conciseness in subtitle translation and express the simplest and most complete meaning in a limited space,the author adopts a reduced translation strategy based on the methods of condensation and deletion;in addition,the author employs various grammatical articulation means such as reference,substitution,ellipsis,and conjunction to make the whole translation compact and coherent.Finally,the author summarizes her translation practice,reflecting on both translator quality and subtitle translation,and pointing out the limitations of this practice report in order to improve future translations of the same type of text.
