Research On Translation Strategies Of Environmental Fiction Under The Guidance Of Skopos Theory

Environment is the basic prerequisite for human survival and development.With the continuous improvement of productivity,social prosperity has reached unprecedented heights.But at the same time,a price of deteriorating ecological environment has been paid.Through studying the translation strategies of environmental fiction,this thesis aims to expend Skopos Theory’s application scope and enhance the environmental protection awareness.The Overstory,written by the famous American writer Richard Powers,is a typical environmental fiction,which describes a story with a vigilant meaning from an ecological perspective and has profound educational significance.Therefore,this book is chosen as the translation research text.The translation theory chosen in this thesis is Skopos Theory that emerged in Germany in the 1970 s.The central idea of Skopos Theory is that every action has a purpose.In order to choose the most suitable translation strategies,the translator should take all relevant factors into consideration based on the purpose of translation.This thesis will conduct a research on translation strategies under the guidance of the Skopos Rule,the Coherence Rule and the Fidelity Rule.After having consulted a large amount of documents and works,the thesis systematically analyzed the origin,development and three main rules of Skopos Theory,made a thorough comparison for the similarities and differences of environmental fiction among China,Britain and the United States.By analyzing the original text,this thesis found that professional terms and some culture-loaded words in the text all reflect the professional and scientific characteristics of environmental fiction.Therefore,in order to better illustrate the role of Skopos Theory in translation process,the rules of Fidelity,Skopos and Coherence are applied to translation at the lexical,syntactic and textual levels respectively.Additionally,some specific and feasible translation strategies are proposed,such as explanation,addition,deconstruction and reorganization.All of the strategies may make the translated text more fluent so as to better meet the reading needs of the target language readers.As a result,through the study of the translation strategies of environmental fiction under the guidance of Skopos Theory,this thesis broadens the scope of application of Skopos Theory and provides useful guidance for the environmental fiction translation.
