Interpreting Tactics From The Perspectives Of Language Differences And Culture Vacancy

The Second IASS-AIS-NNU Advanced Semiotics Workshop was collaboratively launched by the International Association for Semiotics Studies—L’Association Internationale de Sémiotique（IASS-AIS）and Nanjing Normal University（NNU）between July 5^thand July7^thof 2019.It aimed to promote a wider and further dialogue between Chinese and Western semiotics.In the plenary talk phase of this workshop,the reporter served as a simultaneous interpreter for Chinese speakers.Her interpretation received positive feedback.In this project,the reporter was faced with obstacles resulting from two factors:logical analysis and culture-loaded expressions.The problems with logical analysis involved two kinds of difficulties arising from the Chinese-English differences:the processing of the main point of the source language（Chinese）and the presentation of the discourse cohesion of the target language（English）.The problems with culture-loaded expressions were associated with those with absolute culture vacancy and partial culture vacancy.After careful analysis of the recordings from the interpreting project and reflections upon them,the reporter worked out comprehensive solutions to these problems under the guidance of the interpretive theory and the cultural schema theory.Firstly,based on the interpretive theory,the reporter should deverbalize the linguistic form and perceive the main point of the source text,distinguishing primary information from secondary information;secondly,the reporter should understand the characteristics of both Chinese and English and use proper connectives in the period of speech production;thirdly,the reporter should apply the cultural schema theory to interpreting different culture-loaded expressions,and flexibly choose interpreting strategies,including explanation and paraphrasing.With an analysis of the first-hand data,the paper will offer reference for the research of simultaneous interpreting,especially SI for impromptu speeches,and also for peer interpreters.
