| With the rapid development of globalization, international exchanges in terms of science and technology are becoming more and more frequent.Viewed from this perspective, the translation of English for Science and Technology(abbreviated as EST hereafter)is becoming increasingly significant. As a key part of scientific and technological undertakings, scientific and technological texts translation is an important way to disseminate globally scientific and technological information and achievements, which also acts as a significant bridge and link promoting the global development of science and technology. This translation report is based on the translation of Environmental Factors Affecting the Low Temperature Isomerization of Homohopanes in Acidic Peat Deposits,Central China,an essay on geochemistry. In the report, the translation difficulties involving lexical and syntactical aspects are analyzed, discussed and summarized in the light of the Functional Equivalence theory proposed by Eugene A.Nida.On the basis of the analysis of more than 30 translation examples cited from the translation task, relevant solutions to the difficulties are proposed.Apart from Introduction and Conclusion, the report falls into four chapters. The first chapter introduces the background, the arrangement, the requirements and the significant of the translation task. The second chapter is the translation process description,in which the pre-translation,the translating stage and the post-translation stage are described. In chapter three, the main problems encountered in the translation of academic terms, long sentences, sentences with noun-structures and passive voice sentences are classified, analyzed and summarized and on the basis of which relevant solutions to the problems are explored.Chapter four is reflections,in which the experience and loss are listed and expounded.Tips for improvement are also displayed in this chapter. On the basis of more than 30 examples cited from the translation task, thefollowing findings are generated.First of all,for the translation of academic terms, apart from the flexible application of strategies of literal translation and free translation, consulting dictionaries and referring to parallel texts are not only useful but also necessary.Secondly as for the translation of long sentences, the techniques such as splitting, inversion and rearrangement of information units are effective, but in some cases, the effective translation of a long sentence requires more than one technique.Sometimes a natural translated version is the joint-function of many techniques.Thirdly, for the translation of passive sentences, the commonly-applied technique is converting the passive voice into active voice, but it is not always the case.Fourthly,Functional Equivalence theory proposed by Eugene A.Nida has a very positive influence on translation. Finally,in order to reproduce natural translated versions of Scientific and Technological Texts,an active accumulation of expertise in different disciplines is not only useful but also necessary. It is sincerely hoped that the report will be of some value for the translators of similar texts and it can provide useful reference for those who are interested in the learning of translation of scientific and technological texts. |
