| Lead-in is the warming-up before a new class, and it is an important link in the teaching process.Although it only takes 3 to 5 minutes in a class,it plays a crucial role in stimulating students’ interest in learning English, setting up a link between new and old knowledge, and enhancing students’ self-confidence in the process of learning English.Based on this, this thesis investigates the lead-in of English reading in senior high school, finds out the problems, and raises solutions to the existing problems,so as to improve the availability of lead-in of reading in senior high school. This present study, based on the Schema Theory and the Theory of Emotion Filter Hypothesis, takes as subjects 180 students and four English teachers from four natural classes in Grade Two from a senior high school in Xiangtan City,Hunan Province,by means of classroom observation, questionnaire survey and interview.Classroom observation is mainly recorded by taking notes and recording. The data collected by the questionnaire is processed by percentage, and then semi open interviews are conducted with four students and four teachers. This study focuses on three questions:(1)What are the problems in the lead-in of English reading in senior high school;(2)What are the causes of the problems?(3)How should we solve the problems in the lead-in of English reading in senior high school? After a two-month investigation, this thesis makes a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the questionnaire survey, classroom observation and interview, and finds out the problems of the lead-in in senior high school English reading class, which are mainly manifested in the following aspects: the lack of understanding of the lead-in activities;the way of lead-in is too single;the evaluation of the lead-in activities is too monotonous;the main position of students is not well reflected in the lead-in activities;the content of the lead-in is not rich enough.According to the Schema Theory and the Theory of Emotion Filter Hypothesis, this study puts forward three solutions for the majority of senior high school English teachers to help them to solve the problems: design ideas, implementation of activities, and evaluation of activities.Specifically,in the design,we need to consider the pertinence, practicality and interest of the introduction activities. In the implementation,we need to focus on students and follow the principle of activity. In the evaluation, the evaluation methods should be diverse and adhere to the principle of motivation.Based on the findings of the survey, this thesis puts forward corresponding solutions to the problems, hoping that teachers can attach importance to the role of lead-in in senior high school English reading teaching. At the same time, this thesis hopes that the majority of English teachers can reflect on their lead-in design in reading teaching, and adopt various lead-in methods according to students’ needs,so as to stimulate students’ interest in reading and lay a good foundation for the subsequent reading teaching. |
