A Study On The Relationship Between Parental Styles,Differentiation Of Self And Postgraduates’ Vocational Delay Of Gratification

Vocational delay of gratification is the ability of the individual to abandon the timely enjoyment and overcome difficulties in pursuit of higher career goals.It includes both behaviors and characteristics.Family is an important factor in individual career development,parenting styles affect their future career choice and behaviors.Differentiation of self reflects that individuals are able to distinguish between reason and emotion at the inner level,and that they are independent and able to connect with others at the interpersonal level.This paper aimed to explore the characteristics of postgraduates’ vocational delay of gratification and their relationship with parents’ parenting styles and differentiation of self.The study combined quantitative research with qualitative research,quantitative research explored the status quo of vocational delay satisfaction,parenting styles and self differentiation of postgraduates,and the relationship between the three.The qualitative research explored the inner mechanism and performance,was the verification of the results of quantitative research.Quantitative study was conducted to select 579postgraduates’ Parental Bonding Instrument(PBI),Differentiation of Self Inventory-Revised(DSI-R)and Occupational Delay of Gratification Scale(ODGS).SPSS20.0 and AMOS20.0were used to analyze the data.The results were estimated by Bootstrap method and Bayesian estimation method.Qualitative research used semi-structured interview outline,according to the results of the questionnaire,four representative graduate students were selected.The researcher interviewed 4 postgraduates in three topics: vocational delay of satisfaction,parenting styles and differentiation of self.The results of the interview had been analyzed.The results were as follows:(1)There were significant differences in gender,urban and rural areas among the postgraduates in terms of vocational delay of gratification and parenting styles.(2)Vocational delay of gratification was positively correlated with the dimensions of care and autonomy of parenting styles,negatively correlated with indifference / rejection dimension and overprotective dimension,and vocational delay of gratification was positively correlated with differentiation of self.The dimensions of care and autonomy of parenting styles were positively correlated with differentiation of self,and indifference /rejection and over protected dimensions were negatively correlated with differentiation of self.(3)Differentiation of self played an intermediary role between indifference /rejection dimension and vocational delay of gratification,and also overprotection dimension and vocational delay of gratification.The mediating role between care dimension and vocational delay of gratification was established in rural areas and was not established in urban samples,which indicated that there were differences in urban and rural areas.(4)The qualitative study showed the individuals’ parenting styles,differentiation of self and vocational delay of gratification and the interaction process,parenting styles influenced the level of individual′s differentiation of self.Different individuals had different performance in the vocational delay of gratification if they had different levels of differentiation of self.The final conclusions of this paper are as follows:The postgraduates’ vocational delay of gratification have unique features.Parenting styles influenced the level of individual′s differentiation of self and also vocational delay of gratification.Differentiation of self played an intermediary role between indifference / rejection dimension and vocational delay of gratification,and also overprotection dimension and vocational delay of gratification.The mediating role between care dimension and vocational delay of gratification was established in rural areas and was not established in urban samples,which indicated that there were differences in urban and rural areas.
