| The construction and development of Confucius Institutes have always been the focus in the field of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language.Especially in recent years, due to the continuous development of the reality and the objective needs of its own transformation, the functions of cultural communication of Confucius Institutes have received more and more attention.Based on the "5W" model proposed by Lasswell and other communication theories, this thesis selects the Confucius Institute at the University of Saskatchewan as the survey object. It obtains the field data through questionnaires, interviews, etc.,and analyzes the general situation and effects of the cultural communication at the University of Saskatchewan. The subjects are divided into three groups according to their length of exposure to Chinese: subjects with no Chinese-learning experiences, subjects with less-than-6-months learning experiences, and subjects with more-than-six-months learning experience. The Questionnaire investigates their cognition and attitudes toward the selected Chinese cultural elements using the five-level scale model.A total of 63 questionnaires were collected and analyzed by using SPSS 20.0.The results show that Groups with Chinese learning experiences generally have a higher level of understanding of cultural elements than non-experienced groups.Elements closely related to daily life such as tea,Chinese food and traditional festivals are more popular and the respondents generally have a high evaluation of the activities held by the Confucius Institute.Six subjects were randomly selected from the questionnaire survey to be interviewed, and the results were basically consistent with the results of the questionnaire, and were supplemented in detail. This research to some extent reflects the cultural communication status of the Confucius Institute at the University of Saskatchewan,Canada, providing objective data for the academic study of the Confucius Institute’s cultural functions and suggestions for further enhancing cultural communication effects of the Confucius Institute. However, due to the limitations of the research time and the respondents, the results of this study need to be further verified. In the future, researchers with similar topic can extend the time span, increase the number of subjects surveyed and enrich the survey content based on the real condition in order to obtain more convincing data. |
