A Report On The Interpreting Of The 2019 Work Report Of Tianjin Municipal People’s Government Based On The Functional Equivalence Theory

With the continuous deepening of the reform and opening up,China has a closer communication with the international community.Every year,the work reports of governments at all levels have become a necessary window for countries around the world to understand China’s economy,politics,military affairs,diplomacy,education and people’s livelihood development.Therefore,high quality interpretation of government work reports is very crucial,which also puts forward high demands on the theoretical literacy and practical ability of interpreters.Based on this,this simultaneous interpretation selects the government work report delivered by Zhang Guoqing,Mayor of Tianjin,at the Second Session of the Seventeenth People’s Congress of Tianjin in 2019.The report reviews the main work achievements of the Tianjin Municipal Government in 2018,and comprehensively arranges and deploys the main work tasks of 2019.The author(namely,the interpreter)follows the specific guidance of Nida’s Functional Equivalence theory in interpretation practice.The theory believes that there is no situation where the source language and the target language are completely equal in interpreting process.Therefore,the interpreter can use the most appropriate,natural,and equivalent language to better convey the information to be transmitted by the source language.Its aim is to make the target language audience and source language audience have basically the same response after receiving the information.Based on Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory,the thesis specifically analyzes the methods and strategies adopted in the interpretation practice.The thesis is divided into five chapters.The first chapter is an introduction to the task background,the research purpose,the research significance and the thesis structure.The second chapter introduces the theoretical content and framework,theoretical contributions of functional equivalence theory and its application in the interpretation practice.The third chapter briefly describes the whole process of interpretation practice,which includes pre-interpreting,interpreting and after-interpreting.The forth chapter analyzes the specific problems encountered in interpreting practice and the corresponding interpretation strategies from the three levels of vocabulary,syntax,and text under the guidance of Functional Equivalence theory.The last chapter is the conclusion part,which summarizes the experience gained in this interpretation practice,and points out the feasibility of applying Functional Equivalence Theory to such simultaneous interpretation.This thesis believes that the coordination between gaining semantic equivalence and considering formal equivalence should be achieved,so as to improve the translation accuracy.
