A Report On The E-C Translation Of Popular Science News About COVID-19 Under The Guidance Of Functional Equivalence Theory

Since 2020,COVID-19 has been spreading worldwide,greatly influencing the world’s economic,political,and cultural life.Governments and people worldwide are closely watching the development of vaccines that will temporarily and effectively produce antibodies to protect the uninfected.Under such a social background,the writer selected and translated seven articles on COVID-19 vaccine published in Bloomberg Businessweek on August 17,2020.The articles chosen are popular science news and share the features like abundant use of medical,technological,and vaccine terms;alternate use of simple and complex sentences;objective and informative text style etc.The present translation report intends to discuss the guiding theories and strategies of popular science news translation based on this translation practice.This report includes five parts: a description of the translation task,theoretical basis,translation process,case study,and conclusion.Chapter one has three parts: background of the translation task,thesis structure,and significance of the translation task.Chapter two introduces and analyzes five parts: popular science news,news translation,popular science news translation,functional equivalence theory,and the applicability of functional equivalence to popular science news translation.Chapter three introduces the translation procedure in terms of pre-translation,while-translation,and post-translation.Chapter four is the main content of this report.It lists the problems encountered in the translation process at the lexical,syntactic,textual,and stylistic levels,and analyzes the translation strategies adopted to achieve the above four equivalences through case study with the guide of functional equivalence theory.First,lexical equivalence is shown in three aspects:general words,terminology,and rhetoric.During the translation of general words and terminology,semantic explication and domestication are used.Moreover,literal translation and free translation are used in the translation of rhetoric.Second,syntactic equivalence is expounded from aspects of simple sentences and complex sentences,in which the writer uses combination,division,translation in the original order,and recasting translation.Third,textual equivalence is discussed by linking textual logic in the linguistic context.At last,the writer shows the stylistic equivalence by scientific,precise,and fluent style.Chapter five concludes translation practice and the report,summarizes findings and limitations in the report.Through this translation practice and the writing of this report,the author realizes that functional equivalence theory plays a positive guiding role in translating popular science news.And the professional background knowledge related to target texts and the choice of specific translation strategies are also crucial to the quality of translation.At the same time,this translation practice intends to provide domestic readers and vaccine-related industries with an introduction to the research and development background,current situation,and latest development of the COVID-19 vaccine abroad.
