| During the outbreak of the novel coronavirus,colleges had to conduct online teaching.However,the teaching effect is worried.A large number of studies have shown that student engagement is an important index to measure students’ motivation,monitor learning process,and predict academic achievement.However,research on online student engagement is still in infancy in China.The purpose of this research is to investigate the student engagement of junior English majors in online teaching,analyze the influencing factors,and explore teachers’ perception of online student engagement.The subjects of this study are 158 first-year and 58 second-year students of English majors in Hebei Normal University.This study adopts research instruments such as questionnaire and interview.The questionnaire in this study investigates student engagement from three dimensions: cognition,emotion and behavior.After the questionnaire survey,6 first-year students and 6 second-year students are randomly selected to participate in the interview.After that,the researcher selects 3teachers respectively from those who teach first-year and second-year students to interview.The results of the study show that:(1)the overall situation of online student engagement of junior English majors is good,and their cognitive engagement and behavioral engagement are better than emotional engagement.(2)Gender and grade have an impact on online student engagement for junior English majors.In addition,student,teacher,platform,learning resources,and environment also affect online student engagement.(3)From the perspective of the teacher,most teachers think that most students have good student engagement in online teaching.However,there are still many problems.Some students do not perform well in the pre-class preparation tasks.They have low interest in class and are unwilling to participate in learning.The degree of concentration and persistence of students are not very good.According to the research results,several suggestions are put forward for teachers.Firstly,teachers can cultivate students’ self-management awareness and provide operational support for independent learning.Secondly,teachers can prefect online learning evaluation and pay attention to the cognitive and emotional engagement of students.In addition,teachers can strengthen the guidance and motivation of students and provide students with appropriate emotional support.Finally,teachers can make some improvements for learning resources and tools. |
