With the rapid development of science and technology and the improvement of people’s living standard across the world, the public is paying closer attention to their own health. Many popular science texts related to medicine have been introduced into China, and the demand for its translation is on the rise. However, the professionalism of medicine in vocabularies and expression makes its translation work more challenging. This report is based on the English-Chinese translation practice of certain chapters in The Human Brain Book: An Illustrated Guide to Its Structure,Function, and Disorders under the guidance of skopos theory. After exploring characteristics of popular science texts, the report demonstrates translation techniques of typical cases in order to offer valuable suggestions for translators in related fields. This report is divided into five chapters. The first chapter briefly introduces the translation task, the original text “The Human Brain Book” and its author, and illustrates the research significance. The second chapter is about the report’s theoretical basis,i.e.skopos theory, and research results of domestic and foreign scholars on the translation of popular science texts. The third chapter respectively elaborates pre-translation preparation(e.g.consulting parallel texts),translating and post-translating.The fourth chapter presents specific translation methods and techniques of certain original texts at the lexical and syntactic levels. The final chapter summarizes the translation practice, hoping to provide some reference and inspiration for the translation of popular science texts,so as to improve efficiency, readability and accuracy of translating such texts.
