Overseas sinological research is an important way of cultural exchanges between the East and the West. This report is based on the translation of the fourth chapter of Science and the Dao written by American Sinologist Livia Kohn. The author collects the opinions of many scholars at home and abroad, introducing the integration of modern science and traditional Taoist ideas.Based on the fourth chapter of the project Science and the Dao,the author focuses on the information equivalence in the translation process, the difficulties and the corresponding solutions.According to the principle of information equivalence in translation, the author analyzes the translation cases from the aspects of vocabulary, sentence, text and culture, and shows how to achieve information equivalence in the process. The source text has the following characteristics: first of all,it has abundant technical terms, standard style and rigorous choice of words. In the field of Taoism, the most obvious feature of terms is polysemy;in the field of science, there are many rarely used terms.Secondly, difficult sentences are widely used and the sentence structure is complex.Thirdly, the original texts of ancient books are quoted many times in the expressions of strong religious features. In view of these characteristics, translator also encounters a series of difficulties in the translation process: first is the fuzziness and uncertainty of religious terms, the profound philosophy of Chinese culture and the unique characteristics of Taoist translation. And the second is to grasp the style of the translation and how to grasp the style as the attached information of the article in order to match the central information. The last is to find the original text of ancient books.Because of the profound Chinese traditional culture, there are some difficulties in finding and matching the original text of ancient books. Therefore, the information equivalence that the translator pursues in translating the text should not only focus on the equivalence of form and function, but also maintain the information equivalence of semantics and style,so as to make the translation fluent and natural. We should not only consider the information equivalence of different styles, for example, when translating the Taoist philosophy,we should ensure the characteristics and literariness of the translated language and Science and technology article should be precise and accurate. We should also consider the information equivalence of different cultures. For example,Taoist philosophy and Bioscience are two national cultures. The same words will produce different effects in different languages. The translator should pursue the information equivalence between the target text and the original text, instead of blindly maintaining the equivalence of expression forms,so as to realize the information equivalence naturally. As most of the translation content involves the knowledge of Chinese traditional culture and modern science and the audience is mostly domestic readers,it is hoped that the translation will be clear, easy to understand and accepted by Chinese people, promoting Chinese traditional culture and academic thoughts.
