A Report On The English-Chinese Translation Of Strategic Principles For Smart City Development:a Multiple Case Study Analysis Of European Best Practices

With the in-depth development of architectural science and technology,the word“smart city” has entered the public’s field of vision.Countries from all over the world are endeavoring to develop smart cities in order to create a better life with ICT technology.As General Secretary Xi Jinping advocates,“The people’s wish for a good life is our goal”.This translation practice report is selected from Elsevier,an academic journal in Amsterdam,the Netherlands,entitled “Strategic Principles for the Development of Smart Cities: Multiple Case Study Analysis of Classic European Examples”.The source language text mainly describes the dichotomy of smart city research and the usage of strategic principles in smart cities.Although there are a plenty of articles about smart city around the world,the ideas and perspective in this paper are new and special,illustrating how smart city strategy should be applied in urban development.In comparison,relevant research is far less conducted at home.Thus the source language text is worth translating into Chinese,which will undoubtedly offer reference materials for domestic smart city researchers and scholars as well.The author chooses Skopos theory as the theoretical framework for the present translation practice.Classified as architectural English material,the source language text belongs to the informative text.First of all,the author briefly introduces the source text material and reasons for selecting the present paper for translation,and summarizes the guiding role of Skopos theory in the translation of EST texts.What follows is an explanation of the translation process,including before,during and after translation.Besides,the author uses some translation tools such as dictionaries and translation software.Additionally,the author carries out case analysis from lexical,syntactical and textual perspectives.Finally,the author draws a natural conclusion based on what has been discussed above.This report aims to enrich the author’s translation experiences and improve her linguistic competence and theoretical knowledge.In addition,it can offer architectural English translation strategies for relevant practitioners.By doing this practice,it is the sincere wish of the author to provide reference material for domestic experts and scholars,which contributes to the development of smart cities in China.
