| Many researches on the relations between de-verbalization and interpreting directionality at home and abroad focus on simultaneous interpreting,and there have been limited empirical study.To shed some light on the relations between two-way consecutive interpreting and directionality,this practice report,based on the author’s own English-Chinese two-way consecutive interpreting practice for a financial management course,an international training program of Philippine Christian University,analyzes the selected EN-CN and CN-EN interpreting cases to see whether switching directions has affected the de-verbalization performance.It is found that the author de-verbalizes better at the paraphrase level in EN-CN interpreting and better at the elaboration level in CN-EN interpreting.When interpreting with directional shifts,the interpretation in the latter direction is more flexible and freer in expressions.Specifically,when the source language is converted from Chinese to English,the author’s de-verbalization performance is impacted more at the elaboration level with an obvious improvement.And when the source language is converted from English to Chinese,the former direction has a limited effect on the de-verbalization performance and the recasting(P2)strategy is more frequently applied.As a result,this practice report calls on that in interpreting teaching for junior grades,teachers could guide students to practice more paraphrasing especially when interpreting from Chinese into English and draw their attention to the use of plain language to convey the message in both directions. |
