A Report On The E-C Translation Of Old Greek Folk Stories Told Anew (Excepts)

This thesis is based on the translation practice report of Old Greek Folk Stories Told Anew written by American writer of verse dramas and of poetry Josephine Preston Peabody.The author divides each chapter into independent stories,telling people a lot of ancient Greek legends.This translation practice report selects 12 chapters as research materials.As the basis of Western culture,Greek mythology not only conveys the traditional values of the West,but also is a crucial method for us to understand Western culture.With the development of society,the cultural and economic exchanges between China and the Western countries are getting closer and closer,so it is necessary to fully understand the Greek mythology which is regarded as the basis of the Western culture.In the excerpts,there are 105 sentences using rhetorical devices,including 11 commonly used rhetorical devices.This paper analyzes the three most common rhetorical devices: simile,personification and parallelism.Under the guidance of the skopos theory,a variety of translation strategies and skills have been applied to solve specific problems which occur during the translation project.The rhetorical devices applied to guarantee the readability also greatly affects the translation quality.In order to solve the problem,the report adopts such method as literal translation,addition,Adaption and so on to properly deal with the rhetorical devices in the text.The translator tries to sum up the translation rules of figures of speech in order to provide practical reference value for the future translation studies of similar texts.
