A Comparative Study Of MTI English Interpreting Thesis Topics(2013-2019)

The Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council in 2007 approved the establishment of the MTI(Xu,2009).In the same year,the first batch of MTI pilot universities totaled 15 universities,which started to recruit students in 2008(Xu,2009).MTI is divided into two directions:Interpreting and Translation.Over a decade,there are hundreds of colleges and universities recruiting MTI students,but few MTI students conduct their graduation thesis from the perspective of topic selection analysis.With the help of Cite Space,this survey selects the theses of MTI interpreting students from IMU,IMNU,GXU,GXNU and GXUN as the research objects,takes 232 MI theses from the above target universities collected by CNKI between 2013 and 2019 as the data source and conducts the research by using the visual map analysis method.This survey aims to explore the following questions: 1)What are the focuses of the topic selection of the thesis in Guangxi and Inner Mongolia between 2013 and2019? 2)What are the characteristics of the topic selection of theses of interpreting students in Guangxi and Inner Mongolia? And what’s the difference? 3)What are the highly-cited theories used in the thesis of MI graduates represented by the two areas between Guangxi and Inner Mongolia?It is found that the thesis topics selection of MI students in Guangxi tend to be diversified from 2013 to 2019,and the strategy of consecutive interpreting and simultaneous interpreting at the start has evolved into more elaborate banquet interpretation and interview interpretation.Students in Guangxi are no longer limited to the translation of literature,but begin to contact the science and technology,tourism and so on.The MI thesis topics selection in Inner Mongolia is relatively simple,which mainly focuses on simultaneous interpreting,consecutive interpreting,pre-translation preparation,interpretation skills,the difficulties and strategies for simultaneous interpreting or consecutive interpreting,foreign affairs(diplomatic interpretation),interpretation quality,interpretation or notes symbol characteristics and carries out case analysis,practical summary or empirical research.The strategies of consecutive interpreting and simultaneous interpreting at the start are divided into idiom interpretation,medical interpretation,foreign affairs interpretation,science and technology interpretation and conference interpretation.The author has conducted a detailed discussion in the thesis to enrich MI students’ understanding for the current theses development and provide some suggestions for them when selecting the theses topics.
