Motivation is one of the main factors influencing the efficiency of English learning, which determines the learners’ participation and persistence in the process of English learning.Based on the dynamic nature of learning motivation, there are not only positive forces, but also negative forces that affect learners’ learning behavior. These negative forces are called “demotivation”.Learning demotivation affects students’ English learning attitudes, reduces students’ learning effects, and hampers the teachers’ English teaching. In addition,in daily teaching, the author also found that some senior high school students are not interested in English learning and their motivation is insufficient. Therefore, based on D?rnyei’s three-level motivational framework, this thesis takes Sheqi No.1 Senior High School as an example. It aims to explore the demotivation of English learning among rural senior high school students from the aspects of language level, learner level and learning situation level, improving senior high school students’ English learning situation and providing feasible references for related research. This thesis tries to address the following three questions:(1)What is the current situation of demotivation in English learning of senior high school students in rural areas?(2)What are the factors contributing to demotivation in English learning of senior high school students in rural areas?(3)How to overcome the demotivation in English learning of senior high school students in rural areas based on these influencing factors? In this study,250 senior high school students were selected from Sheqi No.1Senior High School as research subjects.Firstly, classroom observation is conducted to explore the overall situation of senior high school students’ English learning motivation. Then, based on D?rnyei’s three-level motivational framework,a questionnaire was designed to investigate the current situation and influencing factors on senior high school students’ demotivation in English learning. Finally, six English teachers and sixteen students were interviewed as an auxiliary to supplement and validate the questionnaire results.SPSS 25.0 was used to analyze the data collected. The results show that:(1)Among all the subjects,75.2% of the senior high school students were experiencing English learning demotivation and it was a common phenomenon.(2)The learner level with the mean value of 3.196 is the most influential one on senior high school students’ English learning demotivation, which is followed by the learning situation level with the mean value of 2.866 and the language level with the mean value of 2.481.At the learner level, the main influencing factors are lack of effective learning strategy and lack of intrinsic interest. At the learning-situation level, improper arrangement of the courses is the most important influencing factor while the language level has little influence on the senior high school students’ English learning demotivation.(3)On the basis of the research results of this study, the author provided some teaching strategies for teachers to overcome students’ English learning demotivation from language level, learner level and learning situation level respectively. At the language-level,the teacher should attach importance to the input of English cultural knowledge and guide students to appreciate English. At learner-level,the teacher should provide some specific instructions on students’ English learning strategy, establish an open and relaxing evaluation atmosphere to help students experience success, and guide students to make positive attributions to improve their self-confidence in learning English. At the learning-situation level, the teacher should change the teacher-centered teaching model, highlight the main role of students and establish a harmonious relationship between teachers and students. In addition, the presentation of English teaching materials should be enriched and a favorable learning environment also should be created, which is very important to stimulate students’ English learning interest.
