This thesis is a report on the English-Chinese translation of a research paper,“Electronic Tickets,Smart Card, and Online Payment: When and How to Advance Sell”.The source text mainly deals with advance selling,a research topic in the field of marketing. As a typical research paradigm, the text was obviously written in an academic style with many specialized terms and mathematical formulae.Full consideration should be given to the professionality of this research paper and the difference between English and Chinese expressions during the process of translation. The Skopos theory was adopted as the theoretical principle to guide my translation practice.First of all,the skopos is important for an applied translation project like this, for it requires the author should analyze the background(social and cultural context)and the text as a whole, and understand the function, purpose and intention(i.e.skopos)of both the source text and the target text. Some specific requirements made by the client represent the immediate skopos—serving the target readers with a reader-friendly,specialized and academic translation version.Secondly, translating a research paper requires that the translation be accurate and standard. The fidelity rule guides us to process the information bit by bit based on sentences and sense groups, and even on some difficult words.Thirdly, the coherence rule is particularly relevant to dealing with some difficulties in translating syntactically and lexically, for the author should make efforts to ensure intertextual coherence,i.e.being coherent to readers. This thesis consists of six parts.Chapter 1 is a general introduction of the translation task, introducing the reasons for selecting this research paper as the source text and the significance of translating it into Chinese.Chapter 2 is literature review.Chapter 3 tells the theoretical basis.Chapter 4 elaborates the translation process, involving preparations before translation, the process of translation, and proofreading.Chapter 5 is the case analysis, which mainly discusses the difficulties during the translation process and tells some practical solutions under the guidance of the three rules of the Skopos theory.Chapter 6 concludes some findings of this translation project and mentions some limitations of the thesis.
