A Report On The E-C Translation Of The Yellow House(Excerpt)

The Yellow House,a debut documentary literature written in the first-person narrative by Sarah M.Broom,shares the tales of her family in New Orleans East where they resided and even of the whole nation since the middle of the last century.Broom’s mother lived in New Orleans East with twelve children,a poor and backward neglected area.There are numerous characters and complicated plots in this works where the yellow house is regarded as the main clue.The translation report is written based on the translation of the epigraph and the first four chapters.The translation quality assessment(TQA)model proposed by Juliane House serves as the theoretical guidance for the translation practice.The source and target texts will be analyzed from three registers including field,tenor and mode so as to meet three requirements for the translation practice: first,the translation should be faithful to the original text;secondly,the translation should have the ease of the original text and conform to normative expressions;lastly,the translation should keep the same literary style as the original text.Thereby,different translation methods and techniques are employed to address the difficulties in the translation process to strike a balance among all sorts of elements.Through the translation report it’s concluded that apart from conceptual meaning,interpersonal meaning and textual meaning should be taken into consideration such as the author’s social attitude and social role relationship when translating documentary literature.Given that there is no translation version of The Yellow House yet,it is hoped that through the translation report an increasing rank of readers can trigger more interest in reading this book for better understanding of African-American life and some racial inequalities in America.
