Music history is an important reference to music development.Translating literature of western music history can help Chinese people know more about western history and promote cultural exchanges between China and the West, which in turn boost cultural development of China.Nowadays, the relatively small number of translations of western music history literature is hindering the spread of western music history and cultural exchanges between China and the West. This paper is an E-C translation report of Capturing Music: The Story of Notation based on the theory of eco-translatology,aiming to analyze the translation strategies and techniques during translation practice.According to the translation method of “Three-dimensional transformation” from eco-translatology,the translator should make selective adaptation and adaptive selection between original and target text in the light of “ecological environment”.Based on the translation practice of Capturing Music: The Story of Notation, and the analysis of cases, the following conclusions are drawn.First, different translation methods and strategies should be adopted depending on the eco-environment of translation. The translation should not only be faithful to the original content but also transfer the original language into target language by using understandable and authentic expression. Therefore, selecting the right translation methods and strategies is of highly necessity.Secondly, the Three-dimensional transformation of language, culture and communication of eco-translatology can serve as a useful guidance when translating Capturing Music:The Story of Notation.By using the translation method of “Three-dimensional transformation”,the E-C translation can better suit the expression habits of Chinese readers, and the translation can be further understood since the cultural differences and communicative intention are clearly presented. The application of eco-translatology to the translation of music history text can not only promote translation of literature on western music, but also boost cultural exchange between China and the West.In the meanwhile,it is also helpful to verify the application of eco-translatology in translation practice and provide a foundation for further development of eco-translatology itself.
